ATLAS Tile Calorimeter Week underway at INCDTIM Cluj-Napoca

By 28 September 2026Fără categorie

This week, from 28 September to 2 October 2026, INCDTIM Cluj-Napoca is hosting ATLAS Tile Calorimeter Week, an international meeting dedicated to research, development and operational activities related to TileCal, the hadronic calorimeter of the ATLAS experiment at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at CERN, Geneva.

The event has 52 registered participants from 12 countries, representing 25 research institutes and universities, alongside other members of the collaboration joining remotely. The meeting reflects the international character of the TileCal collaboration and provides an important forum for exchanging expertise and coordinating ongoing activities.

The presentations during this edition cover the main areas of development, operation and validation of the TileCal system, from ongoing activities to preparations for future generations of calorimeters.

A major part of the programme is dedicated to the Tile Calorimeter Phase-II Upgrade, including the development and validation of the new readout electronics, power supply and control systems, associated firmware and software, calibration procedures, and the integration of components required for detector operation under High-Luminosity LHC (HL-LHC) conditions. The programme also addresses installation and commissioning activities, focusing on the integration of new subsystems, functional checks, connectivity and control tests, and preparations for the commissioning stages.

The Data Preparation and Performance sessions cover detector calibration, data quality and monitoring, electronic noise, response stability and uniformity, as well as detector performance at the channel, photomultiplier tube (PMT), cell and module levels. These activities are essential for validating the data before they are used in physics analyses within the ATLAS experiment.

The programme also includes presentations dedicated to the Tile Calorimeter Test Beam, featuring results on the characterisation and comparison of existing and upgraded systems, pedestal and electronic noise analyses, CIS calibration, readout-channel response, and performance studies under controlled test-beam conditions. These studies contribute to the validation of components and new readout architectures before their integration and operation in the detector.

Long-term development perspectives are also addressed through studies related to the FCC Tile Calorimeter, exploring hadronic calorimetry concepts for future accelerators, geometry and readout options, performance requirements, and the potential evolution of technologies developed within TileCal.

Through its broad scientific programme, ATLAS Tile Calorimeter Week in Cluj-Napoca provides an important forum for presenting recent results, exchanging expertise and coordinating future activities within the international TileCal community, spanning current detector operation and performance, the HL-LHC upgrade, and the development of technologies for future research infrastructures.
